What is micro quilting?

Quilting is the practice of stitching a fabric cover and a layer of filling together in a pattern across the whole surface of the mattress. Micro quilting uses a tight, fine pattern (smaller than traditional quilting) which gives a more uniformly cushioned feel across the sleeping surface. The stitching also stops the soft top layer from shifting around inside, so the mattress stays consistent in feel across all parts of the bed for the life of the product.

How does a micro quilted mattress feel?

Compared to a flat-topped mattress, a micro quilted top feels softer to the touch and slightly more giving in the first inch or so of the surface. The springs or core beneath are unaffected, so a firm pocket sprung mattress with a micro quilted top will still feel firm overall, just with a gentler initial contact at the cover. It's a finish that works well for sleepers who want a supportive mattress without that very-firm feel on the skin.

Which mattresses come micro quilted?

You'll find micro quilting across most mattress types. Pocket sprung models often use it to soften the top of a firm spring unit; orthopaedic mattresses use it to keep the dense fillings in place, and hybrid mattresses often pair micro quilting with a memory foam or latex comfort layer underneath.

Does micro quilting last?

Quilting is one of the most durable elements of a mattress because it's structural. The stitches hold the cover and fillings together, and with normal use a micro quilted top should hold its shape for the full life of the mattress, with no noticeable sagging or bunching. Rotating the mattress every few months and using a protector will both help it stay even.
