Properties of chemical-free mattresses

Organic mattress with natural fillings

Sprung mattresses that incorporate natural fillings are one of the most popular chemical-free sleeping solutions produced by mattress manufacturers. Making use of an open coil or pocket sprung system, many sleep brands like to use natural fibres such as organic cotton, organic wool, silk, alpaca wool, cashmere, mohair and more natural alternatives. There are many benefits to these types of fibre, including breathability, temperature-regulation, softness, insulation and are free of chemical treatments.
Natural fillings are not naturally hypoallergenic because the fibre structure makes it easier for dust mites to pass through the mattress and build up. If you were looking for a sprung mattress that incorporates anti-allergy fillings, you would have to opt for an option with synthetic materials such as polyester, however, such fillings are far from being produced with dangerous chemicals or harmful additives.
Much like many other non-toxic mattresses, sleeping solutions with natural fillings must still be treated with chemical fire retardants to ensure safety, but this is a common mattress material that is found across almost every kind of mattress.

Latex mattresses

Latex mattresses are becoming increasingly popular in the world of organic mattresses, thanks to consisting of natural latex. This non-toxic mattress mirrors many of the properties of memory foam but is comprised of natural materials that are free of harmful chemicals. Natural latex mattresses are body-moulding just like memory foam, offering total body support and even weight distribution all night long. What's more, natural latex foam is breathable, dust mite resistant and naturally hypoallergenic, which really sets it apart from its memory foam counterpart known for strong heat retention. Natural latex is produced without the use of harmful chemicals, however, in order to ensure the mattress is safe for use it has to be treated with fire retardants. Without fire retardant chemicals, it's very easy for natural mattresses to succumb to flames when exposed to a fire.
A natural or organic mattress that uses latex is often referred to as a green mattress. This is because latex is produced by a rubber tree, and whilst it takes a long time for a single tree to produce enough latex for a mattress, overall the material is natural. Such an eco-friendly mattress is usually priced more than other types of sleeping solutions as the use of organic materials means that it takes much longer to produce a natural mattress.
Despite the high-quality materials used in organic latex luxury mattress options, you can find versions of mattresses that use synthetic latex. Whilst this cannot be classed in the same category as non-toxic mattresses due to this synthetic aspect, this type of mattress is still more breathable than memory foam mattresses.

What isn't a chemical-free mattress?

Memory foam

Whilst you may love that sinking-in sensation when it comes to memory foam mattresses, they are made with a variety of compounds, alcohols and reacting agents to create the substance to create the foam mattresses. It's whipped into a foam and placed in a mould of the size of the mattress the manufacturer is producing, then put through several heat-releasing and cooling processes. Once all these stages are completed, the memory foam is washed and dried until there are no more harmful chemicals. As long as chemical flame retardants are used in the process, the mattress will be fire retardant.
Memory foam has been associated with health risks due to the components and processes used to create the mattress, mainly put down to toxic chemicals that can cause skin irritation and an initial strange odour when you receive the mattress. This odour is caused by volatile organic compounds that do fade away after a couple of weeks and is the result of chemical additives and flame retardant chemicals. With this all being said, memory foam is extremely safe for most people but is best avoided by those affected by asthma or respiratory conditions which could be exacerbated by these components.
A memory foam mattress and the synthetic foam used are comprised of millions of tiny holes which mould to the contours of your body when pressure is applied. This closed cell structure means that it has strong heat retention properties due to the air seeping out when you're laying on the memory foam, so if you're a hot sleeper, you may wish to opt for a more breathable mattress option. Lastly, this condensed foam structure ensures the sleeping solution is dust mite resistant because it's virtually impossible for them to inhabit such a mattress.

Geltex

Geltex is a brilliant option for anyone who regularly gets too hot throughout the night thanks to the breathable and cooling properties this material offers. Essentially, Geltex is an air-permeable foam that's infused with elastic gel. You still receive the pressure relief, support and body-moulding superior comfort like you would with reflex or memory foams, yet with the element of breathability to ensure your sleeping environment is cool. Often paired with a spring unit, these types of hybrid mattresses also go through processes involving chemicals and fire retardants to produce these effects and to ensure safety.
