What types of mattresses make an all-season mattress?

Most of our all-seasons mattresses use fillings as the feature that will regulate temperature. Therefore, the primary support is derived from pocket springs. A pocket sprung bed comprises individual springs that work independently, allowing the mattress surface to move to your body contours. This promotes healthy spine alignment, total body support, even weight distribution and pressure relief for you when you choose the support tension appropriate for how you sleep.

Mattresses with natural fillings

Sleeping solutions that include cotton, wool, lambswool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere and silk have strong absorption qualities and can control moisture levels as you sleep. We stock a variety of mattresses that have incorporated a variety of natural fillings. Such beds often have chrome air vents stitched around the perimeter of the mattress border. When these natural materials wick away excess moisture and heat, the mattress can remain breathable and absorb cool air. Overall, the good air circulation from the chrome-finished vents and these fillings make a great mattress and a wonderful night's sleep.

A mattress with natural fibres is likely not the best option if you're affected by a dust mite allergy. These fibres' pore sizes are large, making it easier for dust mites to pass through the bed and build up over time. If you're affected by this, consider a mattress with polyester fillings instead.

Mattresses with polyester fillings

Whilst synthetic fillings do not offer the same temperature regulation as natural ones, they're great for anyone affected by a dust mite allergy. Polyester is neither warming nor cooling, making them highly versatile and appropriate for an all-season mattress. Unlike their natural counterparts, polyester fibres have tiny pore sizes. This makes it hard for dust mites to pass through a mattress and build up over time, which is perfect for allergy sufferers.

Double-sided all-seasons mattress

The Restopaedic Cool Pocket 1000 Mattress features a pocket spring system to provide primary support. A deep layer of warming memory foam on the winter side of the mattress is designed to retain heat. Instead of incorporating versatile fillings that regulate temperature no matter the weather, we stock a double-sided mattress with a cooling summer side and a warming winter side. On the opposite side, the hypoallergenic polyester fillings complement Restopaedic's Ultra Cool Ice Fabric which feels cool to the touch. So, no matter the time of year, one side of the mattress provides the temperature-regulating properties you need for a good night's sleep.

What mattresses to avoid

Memory foam

Despite the Restopaedic Cool Pocket including memory foam on one side of the mattress, generally, there are better mattress types than memory foam to be used all year round, especially if you tend to sleep hot. This is because memory foam comprises millions of tiny holes that expel air when pressure is applied to the mattress. This means there's little airflow, and heat is retained very well. Therefore, when it comes to the hot months, you may find your mattress makes you feel uncomfortable when you're off to bed. With this in mind, we recommend avoiding memory foam unless it's incorporated into a double-sided seasonal mattress.

Memory foam alternatives

Gel foam and natural latex mattresses are fantastic choices for anyone seeking the body moulding support of a memory foam mattress but would prefer a breathable mattress to avoid the prospect of overheating. Gel foam mattresses feature cooling technology on the mattress's surface, culminating in cooling mattresses for hot sleepers. Similarly, latex mattresses are recognised for their temperature regulation properties due to their elasticity and breathable sleep surface. Compared to memory foam mattresses, latex options are regarded as more responsive and 'bouncier'.

What mattress tension is suitable for me?

Different sleeping positions require different mattresses, and the perfect mattress for back and stomach sleepers is unlikely to be suitable for side sleepers and vice versa.

I sleep on my side

Soft and medium mattresses are designed with side sleepers in mind and feature a soft surface to provide cushioned hip and shoulder support.

I like to sleep in various positions throughout the night

Medium firm mattresses are considered 'all-rounders' due to being able to accommodate front, back and side sleeping. A medium mattress features a surface soft enough to gently cushion the hip and shoulder whilst side sleeping yet is firm enough to evenly distribute weight whilst front or back sleeping.

I'm a front and back sleeper

In contrast to side sleepers who require softer mattresses to ensure sufficient support, firm and extra firm mattresses are designed for front and back sleepers. These mattresses relieve pressure and can help to soothe minor aches. If you'd like to add an additional comfort layer to your mattress, consider a mattress protector and enhance the mattress's comfort offerings without compromising on support.
