World Statistics Day is celebrated every 5 years and was designated by the United Nations in 2010 as the first World Stats Day was born, it is a day designed to highlight the importance of reliable data which allows us to create informed decisions and it is a day that is recognised globally.

With today being World Statistics Day we could think of no better way of celebrating than bringing you a collection of insightful sleep stats, some of which you may be able to recognise from your current sleep patterns or routines.

  • Newborn babies spend approximately 65% of their time in REM sleep, which is part of the sleep cycle where our dreams occur.
  • According to a recent survey by the Sleep Council, only 1% of Britons are in bed by 9 pm.
  • 16% of US employers provide an area to nap in the workplace.
  • The average person falls asleep in 7 minutes.
  • People who rent furnished properties sleep worse apparently. 20% report that their uncomfortable bed disrupts their sleep, compared with only 13% of those who own their own bed.
  • 25% of people dream in black and white.
  • 41% of people sleep in the fetal position.
  • On average, parents lose between 400 and 750 hours of sleep in each child’s first year.
  • Around 2% of the population has a gene that allows them to get by with only 4 hours of sleep each night.

Did you know, that a few of these stats can be used to improve your sleep? For example; adjusting your routine so that you can get an earlier night can really benefit your sleep and your overall well-being. Getting even just that extra hour of sleep can mean that you will be more productive throughout the day, you’ll wake feeling refreshed and you could find yourself becoming less stressed.
