There’s always talk about how often we should be replacing our mattresses, but have you given much thought to how often we should change our bed frames? In one of our earlier blogs: ‘How long should a mattress really last?’, we came to the conclusion that there isn’t a ‘certain time’ that our mattress starts to deteriorate.
For this blog, we’re going to come to much of the same conclusion, and show you the signs to look out for a worsening bed frame…
Our first frame-replacement signal may be a little obvious: creaking. If your frame is creaking away, it can be put down to one of two things. Either, the screws aren’t tight enough and it causes the joins to rub against each other, which is what creates the sound. This could also be the case for a deteriorating bed frame, as you may find yourself having to tighten the screws regularly to stop the creaking. If you’re having to regularly do this, then it’s likely time for you to replace your bed frame.
Another good indicator that you’re due a new bed frame is when the slats don’t sit on the frame properly, or have bent and bowed over time. This will cause the mattress to sit funny over the frame which will affect the overall support you receive. Over time, backache or pain can emerge from sleeping on a surface that has promoted poor spinal alignment, even if you can’t feel that the slats aren’t in the right position.
General wear and tear of a bed frame is an obvious indicator that the frame isn’t standing the test of time. Whether the screws are bending or getting looser, the wood is becoming cracked or showing splits, or the ottoman function isn’t as swish as it used to be, it might be a good idea to start looking for a durable new bed frame.
If you’ve bought a new mattress recently and it hasn’t relieved you of your aches and pains, it may be because you’ve placed it on a bed frame that can’t adequately support you. For example, if the bed frame has any of the characteristics discussed above, this flaw will automatically make the support of the mattress redundant.
It’s common for people to place a lot of emphasis on the support of a mattress, which makes sense because this is the surface that is directly underneath us as we sleep. However, the mattress itself needs support for it, in turn, to do the same for us. Therefore it makes sense that we look after our bed frames so we can get the most out of our mattresses, and replace them when we begin to see the signs of deterioration.
And there you have it, all of our signs to look out for in your bed frame, and when you should be replacing it. This probably goes without saying: cheaper bed frames are not designed to stand the test of time, but when you invest in a quality bed frame they can last up to a decade.
