What firmness suits an older child?

For children, a medium firm mattress is usually the right choice. It keeps the spine in a healthy posture as the child grows, supports active sleepers (and most children move around a lot in their sleep), and holds up to years of bouncing without losing its shape. Avoid very soft mattresses for children, which don't give a developing spine the support it needs.

Sizes to consider

A standard single mattress (90 x 190cm) is the most common choice for older children and fits virtually any bed frame designed for that age group. Some families opt for a small single (75 x 190cm) where space is tight, or where the mattress is destined for a cabin bed or bunk. If you're buying for a bunk bed, check the maximum mattress depth listed by the bed frame manufacturer: most bunks require a thinner mattress than a standalone single bed to keep the sleeper a safe distance from the top guard rail.

Materials that work well

Most children's mattresses are pocket sprung or open coil with simple comfort fillings. Pocket sprung mattresses are more responsive and tend to last longer; open coil mattresses are usually a bit cheaper and suit a child who's likely to outgrow the bed before the mattress wears out. Memory foam is generally not the right choice for younger children because it sleeps warm and the deep sink feel can be uncomfortable for restless sleepers.

Hypoallergenic options

If your child has allergies, asthma, or sensitivity to dust mites, an anti-allergy mattress with hypoallergenic fillings is worth considering. Most modern children's mattresses include a hypoallergenic cover or treatment as standard.

How often should you replace it?

A children's mattress generally needs replacing every five to seven years, sooner if it's been in heavy use or if the child has grown significantly. Watch for visible sagging, lumps in the surface, or your child complaining about being uncomfortable. Use a mattress protector throughout the mattress's life to keep dirt and moisture out of the fillings.
