What does a safe infant mattress look like?

Firm, flat and well-fitted to the cot. There should be no gap of more than 4cm between the mattress and the sides of the cot. The mattress should not be soft, plush or memory foam: an infant should not be able to sink into the surface, which is the principle behind safe-sleep guidance.

Standards to check for

UK infant mattresses should meet BS 1877-10 (the British standard for cot and crib mattresses) and BS 7177 (flammability). Both are referenced on the product page of every infant mattress we stock.

Breathability matters

An infant should not overheat at night. A breathable mattress with a knitted, removable cover and natural fillings (or hypoallergenic synthetic equivalents) helps regulate temperature. Many infant mattresses come with washable covers as standard.

When to replace

Replace an infant mattress between each child rather than passing it down, particularly if it has visible wear, lumps or stains. A used infant mattress carries higher risk in the first year of a child's life.

Delivery

Our infant mattresses are in stock for free next-working-day delivery on orders before 4pm.
