What does "fibre filling" mean?
Fibre filling refers to any soft, loose material packed into the comfort layer of a mattress above the spring or foam support core. The fibres might be natural (wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, horsehair, coconut fibre) or synthetic (polyester, hollowfibre). Most mid-range and higher-end mattresses use a blend of several materials chosen for their feel, breathability and durability.
Which fibres are commonly used?
Wool
Wool is one of the most temperature-regulating fibres available. It wicks moisture away from the skin, traps heat in winter and releases it in summer, and is naturally hypoallergenic. It's found in most natural and higher-specification mattresses.
Cotton
Cotton is breathable, soft and a strong choice for sleepers who prefer a natural mattress without the price tag of wool or silk. It compresses more readily than wool, so cotton-heavy fibre fillings tend to feel slightly softer.
Silk and cashmere
Silk and cashmere are luxury fillings, usually found near the top of a mattress's comfort layer for the feel they give the sleep surface. Both are temperature-regulating and lightweight.
Synthetic fibres
Hollowfibre and polyester fillings are used in entry-level and mid-range mattresses for their durability and resistance to compression. They're not as breathable as natural fibres but cost less.
How does a fibre filled mattress feel?
Compared to memory foam or latex comfort layers, fibre fillings offer a softer, more cushioned surface feel and almost no body-moulding sink. The support tension comes from the springs beneath, so a firm pocket sprung mattress with fibre fillings will still feel firm overall, just with a softer surface. Fibre filled mattresses are typically breathable, which suits sleepers who run warm.
Durability and care
Fibre fillings need to be kept in place to last, which is why most fibre filled mattresses are hand tufted or heavily quilted. Rotate the mattress every few months and use a protector to keep the fillings clean.
