The History of the Mattress

The Mattress has been essential in everyday life for centuries. As most humans spend around a third of their life sleeping having the right Mattress is crucial. Dating back to 3600 BC the Mattress has been made out of all sorts of odd materials. Originally being made out of animal skin and then goat skin filled with water, the Mattress has clearly advanced into a much more desired product to sleep on today.

The Romans were rather fond of the Mattress as they created the first luxury bed decorated with bronze, gold and silver while the Mattress was filled with reeds, hay, wool and sometimes feathers. The Romans also made waterbeds as the sleeper would lie in warm water until heavy eyed and would then be lifted onto a cradle with a mattress to fall asleep in while being rocked.

By the start of the 18th century Mattresses were being made with more care and better materials. Mattresses were being stuffed with cotton or wool while the Mattress covers were being made with quality linen. Mid 18th century the Mattress cane box is shaped or bordered and is filled using natural fibres such as Coconut Fibre and Horsehair.

Mattresses had become a lot less lumpy by the end of the 19th century as the box spring is invented. The Box spring is a wooden frame covered in cloth containing springs. It’s used to help raise the Mattresses height, absorb shock, to reduce wear and most notably to create a flat structure for the Mattress to lie on.

Pocket spring mattresses were first introduced in the 1930s; they contained individual springs sewn into linked fabric bags. Later on in the 1950s foam rubber Mattresses were available to the public providing a much more comfortable sleeping experience.

25 years after NASA invented the material; the first Memory Foam Mattress was introduced. Initially used to decrease pressure sores and gangrene for medical use only, the Mattress is now used worldwide and considered as one of the most comfortable and relaxing mattresses around.
