Tips to help you wake feeling refreshed

 

We are constantly being told we need to treasure our beauty sleep and how important a good night’s kip is – but what do you do if you feel as though you’ve had a good night’s sleep but you’ve woken up feeling groggy?

Sometimes we can get hours of sleep – maybe even more than we’re used to – and still wake up feeling tired. That’s because the quality of sleep we’re getting each night can affect how we wake up feeling. It should be no surprise that if we get eight hours of constantly disturbed sleep, we’ll feel worse in the morning than if we get four hours of solid, undisturbed sleep!

There a few practices that you can turn into daily or nightly habits in order to encourage a great night’s sleep, leaving you feeling fresh and ready to take on the day when you wake in the morning! Here are our tips to help you wake feeling refreshed:

  • Avoid coffee, alcohol and chocolate right before bed
    Avoiding large amounts of coffee and alcohol, as well as not eating rich food such as chocolate and cheese right before you go to bed will prevent you from ruining your sleep. It will also mean you won’t end up going to bed on a full stomach, which can affect your quality of sleep during the night.
  • Leave time between meals and going to sleep
    To prevent waking up feeling groggy, avoid going to bed on a full stomach. It takes a while for food to process through our digestive systems, so try and leave a few hours between eating your last meal of the day and going to bed.
  • Keep a tidy and uncluttered room
    Keeping a clean and tidy bedroom will make sleep and bedtime in general much more inviting, even waking up to a tidy space will encourage a much better start to the day. To make your room more inviting, consider investing in key pieces that won’t clutter your space but create a cosy haven.
  • Climb into a comfy bed each and every night
    If your bed is uncomfortable then you’ll be lucky to get to sleep – make sure you’re doing everything possible to nod off nice and early by investing in a new mattress offering the right level of support for your sleep style.   • Make sure you’re not too hot or cold
    Making sure your bedroom is at the right temperature is imperative to a good night’s sleep and therefore important to waking up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day! If it’s nearer autumn and winter, does the room need heating slightly before going to bed or is it worth taking a hot water bottle instead? On the other hand, if your room is too hot, get some cool air circulating either with a fan or by opening a window. Wearing cotton PJs and using cotton sheets will help too, with the natural fibre allowing your skin to breathe and air to circulate through your bedding.
  • Keep bedroom windows open
    As long as the weather permits and it’s not too cold, sleeping with your bedroom windows open will ensure fresh air is circulating around you whilst you sleep. This will keep you comfortable during the night, leaving you feeling refreshed and well rested when you wake up.
  • Stick to a sleep routine
    Keeping to a regular sleep pattern will mean you get better quality sleep each night – your body will eventually get used to the habit of a regular routine, and you’ll soon be left feeling less tired in the mornings and much more refreshed than if you went to bed at random times each night.
  • Drink plenty of water
    Drinking a glass of water when you wake is not only great for your overall health but will kick-start your metabolism ready for the day, leaving you feeling much more alert and much less tired.
  • Avoid hitting snooze on your alarm
    When your alarm wakes you, try and get up straight away rather than hitting snooze as this will ensure you avoid all temptation to fall back to sleep. In turn, it will prevent you from feeling groggy when you eventually do wake up.
