10 Tips for Winter Mornings

We can’t quite see our breath here at Mattressman HQ, but there are several pairs of thick socks visible around the office, and the weather forecast indicates that on Friday we’ll see a high… of 8°C. So, it’s safe to say that it’s pretty cold right now. And never do we feel that more keenly than when we have to get out of bed in the morning.

After you’ve hit the snooze button for the third time and are faced with the certainty that you’ll be rushing out the door five minutes late with a piece of hurriedly buttered toast held between your teeth even if you get up right this second, you might find yourself wondering if there’s a way to make this whole process just a little bit easier. Here are our tips for the winter mornings when you’d rather just stay in your cosy blanket burrito.

1) This isn’t the time to skimp on the heating. Set it to come on 45 minutes or so before you wake, so that your house has time to heat up. Pick out your outfit for the day the night before and lay it over the radiator so that it’s nice and warm when you get dressed.

2) Keep a pair of warm slippers and a dressing gown by your bed so that you can put them on the moment you venture out from under the covers.

3) Try to get up as soon as your alarm goes off. As soon as you’re awake enough to actually think about it, you’ll be able to come up with an astonishing number of reasons why another five minutes in bed is a great idea. Make getting out of bed a reflexive response to the sound of your alarm and you won’t have to have the internal battle with yourself every morning.

4) If you are someone who can’t stop hitting “snooze”, try putting your alarm far away from your bed. Being out of bed is never as bad as getting out of bed — force yourself into getting up and it will be easier to convince yourself you should stay that way.

5) Head straight for the shower. Not only will the water help to warm you up, but it will also get your blood circulating and help to wake you up.

6) Tea or coffee can work wonders to make you feel both warm and alert. Keep water on the bedside table so that you’re able to have a drink as soon as you wake up.

7) You can also drink something right before you go to sleep — if you wake up needing to use the bathroom, chances are staying in bed won’t seem so appealing.

8) If you find yourself thinking longingly of your bed more often than usual during the winter, it could be partly due to you getting less vitamin D, of which sunlight is a big source. You can get vitamin D supplements from most pharmacies and large supermarkets.

9) Eat something warm for breakfast, such as porridge or scrambled eggs on toast, rather than the usual cereal.

10) Make sure you have a good night’s sleep. Of course you can sleep like a log and still be unwilling to leave your bed, but it will be even more difficult if you’re also exhausted. Get yourself some warm and comfortable bedding, block out as much light and noise as possible, and head to bed early.
